Santander and Nationwide ATM cash deposits
Hi UK FTers. Can I pester you with a question about UK ATM deposits for the above banks?
According to my Googling, both the above banks have ATM deposit facilities. I am in London on a Sunday only and will need to get rid of some money.
Are these machines quite ubiquitous? If there is an ATM can I "bank" on it also accepting cash deposits? I a wondering if I find a branch in Central London, can I assume that there will also be a machine accepting deposits?
Finally, Nationwide says I can deposit up to £2500. Does anyone know if this is per transaction or per day?
Thanks if anyone can shed any light on this

Whilst ATMs are ubiquitous in the UK none of the ATMs of the banks I use appear to be able to take cash deposits on an external ATM.
I do recall many moons ago the RBS machine I used most of the time did but the issue was getting an envelope to fit the notes / cheque into as the machine often had none to spit out at you when you selected the deposit option.
Many banks have them inside the branch - which of course are only open during normal hours.

Thanks UKtravelbear
I had imagined, perhaps incorrectly that such ATM deposit machines would be inside some sort of vestibule or airlock, so even when the branch is closed, the machines would be accessible.
It's just occurred to me that Santander on Oxford Street near M&S Pantheon is huge and the banking hall is on the first floor, but I cannot recall what the ATM set up is and whether the ground floor is accessible when the branch is closed

Note that Post Offices now allow you to pay in cash & cheques to most current accounts.

The Post Office on Lower Regent Street is open 12-4pm on a Sunday.
However you seem to suggest you're going to be paying in a significant amount of cash so just be mindful that you don't go triggering any AML checks....

Just to clarify, you do intend to deposit into a UK-based account, right?

I didn't know that about the Post Office. I think I will be pushing it a bit, I land from CPH at about 2pm and need to check into the HGI Heathrow beforehand.
Note taken about money laundering

Yes, I have accounts at the above two banks. I also have a Tesco current account. Is it possible to deposit at a checkout in a Tesco?

Open 8am to 10pm on a Sunday apparently.
(I'll leave whether walking around Feltham with more than £20 in cash is a good idea up to you...)

Many Santander ATMs (definitely the older-style ones with a CRT screen, and some of the newer-style street-facing ones) just keep your cash until the branch opens, when it is manually counted by the staff.
If you'll be in central London, you can investigate other branches for yourself, but if unsuccessful, I suggest going to the Santander branch at 140-144 Kensington High St, London W8 7RL.
This has two ATMs which accept deposits and credit the cash instantly to your account. The ATMs are located in what you call a "vestibule" or "airlock", to which you need to swipe your debit card to gain access when the branch is closed. There is a limit of 90 notes per transaction, but you can do multiple transactions.

One consideration for the future may be to open an account at Metro Bank, which is open 11-5 Sundays and only closes Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Easter Sunday.

Metro bank have always been very friendly and tried to persuade me to switch from Lloyds once. Unsuccessfully because they couldn't give me a free premium account (which they no longer do anyway) or the facilities of private banking for free both of which Lloyds give me. Lloyds also have deposit point facilities at some of their external cashpoints and you can deposit notes cheques etc.

If its not too late, HSBC have ATMs that can "read" cash and it's credited to your account immediately. I'm not sure where in Central London they have one that will be accessible, but there are ones at Canary Wharf and Stratford that are "open" (ie no staff working, but you can access the machines).
Just a cautionary tale, I had cash get jammed in these machines, once in the note reader and once in the coin machine. I was depositing notes on a Friday evening and there was nothing that could be done until Monday morning. Thankfully it was all fine and they called to confirmed it was in the account.

But these are the ones which get counted manually the next working day. I'd rather get instant confirmation - even though the most likely cause of a discrepancy would be my own misteake, theft is still possible.

Practically all central London branches have a machine, but I don't believe any of them open on Sunday, and the OP probably doesn't have an account otherwise he would have said. The good thing about HSBC's machines is that they will take OLD Scottish, NI, IOM, Jersey and Guernsey notes (not too old), but they frequently jam, and the staff have to retrieve the notes from inside. Automated Santander, Halifax, Lloyds and Nationwide deposit machines don't jam as easily and will return folded/creased notes, whereas with HSBC they just get trapped until the machine is reset.
